Academics who are keen to publicise their work and boost their profiles will benefit from an GBP 8 million initiative launched by the UK funding councils, the research councils and the Wellcome Trust. A generation of young researchers are being prevented from communicating their work to the public due to fears of disapproval from peers and time constraints.

Hillegonda Rietveld, a senior lecturer in the Arts and Media Scheme at London South Bank University, balances her career as a lecturer with a second career as a DJ. She argues that the lifestyles involved in the two jobs are actually very similar, with a similar amount of time put into the work and a need to 'publish' work to be recognised.
